Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES INSURANCE WORK?

Yes, I currently accept UHC, BCBS, and Aetna. Using insurance benefits to cover therapy is only eligible to be used for individual therapy.  Once we schedule a first session I’ll help you figure out what the fee for therapy is with your insurance. We’ll make sure to talk about the fee and any insurance updates throughout so that you always know what to expect.

DO YOU OFFER A SLIDING SCALE?

Yes, depending on your financial circumstances we can have a conversation about a temporarily reduced fee. I am also part of Open Path Psychotherapy Collective. Open Path offers reduced fees when you join and become a member. Please note that I have limited spots available for Open Path clients. In addition, these spots are only available for those who meet the requirements to join Open Path. For more information, visit Open Path’s website.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY USUALLY LAST?

The length of therapy depends on your goals for therapy. There is no set number of sessions. Therapy is meant to be your process and helpful for you. You always have the right to ask questions or end therapy at any time if you find that it is no longer helpful to you. Most people can expect to see a therapist for 10-20 sessions.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THIS IS THE RIGHT FIT FOR ME?

It is important that you find the right fit for therapy because it is your process. Every therapist offers a different experience and style. My background is in Marriage and Family Therapy, which means I offer specific insight for issues that have originated in your personal, family, and cultural environment. If you want to learn more about yourself, understand why you get so upset, want to feel less anxious, or just try therapy for the first time then this would be a great fit for you. Some things that you can expect from me include: offering a non-judgmental space, empathy, support, a calm presence, and an invitation to turn inwards and self reflect. If you are experiencing substance addiction or are actively a risk to yourself or others, this setting is not the ideal place for you. Feel free to reach out to me for a phone conversation so that we can determine if this feels like the right fit for you. If I believe that this is not the right fit for you I will offer a list of referrals.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN THE FIRST SESSION?

For individuals: the first session usually involves sharing information about your history and background. I want to understand you more and what made you decide to seek therapy. We will also talk about your goals and needs for therapy.

For premarital couples: the first session involves a history of your relationship as well as a conversation around how to tailor the Prepare and Enrich curriculum to your needs and goals.

HOW CAN THERAPY HELP ME?

Therapy can be beneficial in a variety of ways. Therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, self-esteem, relational distress, trauma, and spirituality. It can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn. Some of the benefits available from therapy include:

  • Attaining a better understanding of yourself, your goals and values
  • Developing skills for improving your relationships
  • Learning new ways to cope and understand emotions
  • Improving communications and listening skills
  • Changing old behavior patterns and developing new ones
  • Discovering new ways to solve problems in your relationships.
  • Improving your self-esteem and boosting self-confidence
HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

To make an appointment just fill out the information in the “Contact Me” section above. Once I receive your request I will schedule a brief phone call with you to hear about your specific needs and walk you through the logistics of getting started. Please note that it may take several days before we are able to schedule an appointment.

WHAT ARE YOUR SCHEDULING HOURS?

All my hours are in the central time zone. I have availability Monday, Tuesday morning, Wednesday, and Friday morning. My first spot is at 8:30am and my last available spot is at 3pm.  I do not have any weekend or later evening appointments. Appointments fill up quickly and they are first serve. If we find a time that works well for both of us I can usually block this time off for you indefinitely. To inquire about times that I currently have available please reach out.

IS ONLINE THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?

I only offer online therapy and because therapy often involves sharing personal and vulnerable information it’s important to do it in an environment that feels private and comfortable. Many of the same types of therapeutic treatment can happen just as successfully online as they do in person. For online therapy to be successful there are a few things that you need access to: a quiet and private environment (work or public environments are not ideal), a strong internet connection, and a device with sound and audio capabilities.
